The Formation and Growth of Cavities and Cracks in a Superplastic Al-Li Alloy. (1998)

Abstract
Experiments were conducted on a superplastic Al-Li alloy to determine the mechanical characteristics over a range of temperatures and strain rates; the alloy develops extensive internal cavitation during superplastic deformation and it is shown that the cavities are nucleated at the grain boundaries and they tend to be more numerous in the vicinity of the fracture tips; experimental evidence is presented both for the formation of cavity stringers and for the growth of cavities in crack-like manner to produce reasonably stable crack networks; the experimental observations are compared with the standard mechanisms of cavity growth and with two alternative models in which cracks propagate along grain boundaries between cavities located at adjacent triple junctions.
