Investigation of application sharing systems for teaching purposes in engineering disciplines (2007)

Abstract
Education has become one of the most crucial factors of our community regarding industry as well as all other areas of daily life. Besides the teacher’s competency, success is depending on active participation of students in lectures, their collaboration with teacher and co-learners as well as on the comprehensibility and completeness of the material. Instead of just being present, students have to deal with problems and solutions by themselves, ask questions and make comments. To this end, teachers should proceed in a constructive rather than an instructive manner, and let students have access to the material even during lectures. Moreover, learning in groups has to be encouraged to increase effectiveness and train social abilities. With more wide spread usage of mobile devices and wireless networks, new possibilities are arising to achieve these goals. Currently, a lot of work is underway to bring wireless equipment to the campus and find out its potential for teaching. For instance, in the Pebbles project a facility is provided for remote pointing in application windows. Davis et al. (1999) enable teacher and learners to make public and private notes for later retrieval. In the JETS 2000 project, an electronic pendant of hand raising and direct feedback to teachers are available
