Exponential Precision in A/D Conversion with an Imperfect Quantizer (2001)

Abstract
We analyze mathematically the eect of quantization error in the circuit implementation of Analog to Digital (A/D) converters such as Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) and Sigma-Delta Modulation (). We show that modulation, which is based on oversampling the signal, has a self correction for quantization error that is not inherited by PCM. This result may partially explain the success of such converters.
