The Global Age: From a Skeptical South to a Fearful North (1996)

Abstract

This is the text of the Raul Prebisch Lecture, given at UNCTAD IX in Johannesburg on 29 April, 1996. In it, I discuss (i) Prebisch and UNCTAD; (ii) the reversal of fears of globalization from the South to the North; (iii) arguments over real wages and jobs under globalization; (iv) intrusionism: environmental and labour standards; and lastly, (v) I present a new architecture to transcend fears of the Global Age.
